Imphal: The two Lok Sabha seats of Manipur are expected to witness multi-corner contests even as the BJP and MPP have announced the names of their candidates while the Congress had not yet decided on its nominees.
Presently, T Meinya (Congress) is representing Inner Manipur while Independent Mani Charanemei is holding the other seat. The BJP has named former Chief Minister W Nipamacha for the Inner Manipur seat while the CPI, a constituent of the Congress-led Secular Progressive Front (SPF), has named Dr M Nara, who fought last time, for that seat.
The Manipur People's Party (MPP) has also announced that Prof N Mohendra will contest the Inner Manipur seat. The Congress may decide to field its candidates in both the seats. Meanwhile, the Manipur People's Party and BJP were trying to forge an alliance and going together. The two parties failed to reach a consensus.
Five political parties have joined hands and announced their decision to go together and support each other. The five Opposition parties - MPP, NCP, NPP, MSCP and CPI(M) - will pitch their full support to the consensus candidates. The MPP has five MLAs, NCP four MLAs and NCP three MLAs in the 60-member House. Among the five political parties the MPP will project its candidate Prof N Mohendra and the NCP its candidate L B Sona. Mohendra is from Imphal and L B Sona from Churachandpur district.
The sitting MP of Outer Manipur, Mani (Independent) has also announced his desire to contest again. Polling for Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency will be on April 16 for which notification will be issued on March 23. The last date of filing nominations is March 30 and scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 31. Last date of withdrawal of nominations is April 2.
Polling for Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency will be on April 22. Notification of the election will be issued on March 28. Last date of filing of nominations will be on April 4 and scrutiny will take place on April 6. Last date of withdrawal of nominations is fixed on April 8.
The Congress won eight times in Inner Manipur and seven times in Outer Manipur. The party's wins also recorded individual record of four victories in both seats. Prof N Tombi Singh won four times in Inner Manipur, while Prof Meijinlung Kamson won as many times in Outer Manipur.
Th Chaoba also won three times in Inner Manipur, first as a Congress candidate, secondly as candidate of Manipur State Congress party and third on a BJP ticket.
