New Delhi: Under fire over non-implementation of One Rank One Pension, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday assured ex-servicemen that his government is committed to implement the scheme. Failure to keep their promises by successive governments over the implementation of 'One Rank One Pension' scheme has irked defence forces veterans who are now planning to hold a massive protest in the national capital.
In his 'Mann Ki Baat' address, Modi hit out at the opposition for politicising the issue and doing nothing during its tenure. "I am not talking as a Prime Minister. One Rank One Pension- for 40 years this question has been persisting. Nothing happened so far. This government will give the solution to OROP," said Modi.
OROP has been a long-standing demand of the over 2 million ex-servicemen in the country. It seeks to ensure that a uniform pension is paid to defence personnel who retire at the same rank with the same length of service, irrespective of their date of retirement.
Modi said various departments were working to resolve the complexities as "it is not a simple matter" and added that "running commentary" through the media on the details of the progress will not help.
He also reached out to students, fishermen, poor and highlighted his government's success in the recently launched three social security schemes. Modi said that over 8.5 crore people have joined the schemes within 20 days of their launch. The schemes are Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana.
While congratulating students for their success in Board exams, Modi said they should think about serving the nation. "We should make sure that our dreams are in sync with the dreams of the country. You should know your strong points and work on them. For those who couldn't pass, I say success and failure are part of life, you must not let go of this failure, must learn from it," said Modi.
Reaching out to fishermen, Modi hailed the launch of Kisan TV. Modi said, "Kisan TV channel is a channel where both the teacher and the student are farmers. Kisan TV channel is important for me, I see future through Kisan channel, it's an open university for agriculture and irrigation."
His comments assumed significance as it came days after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi met fishermen in Kerala.
