New Delhi: With days to go before Manipur goes for the first phase of Assembly elections on February 8, two poll candidates including state Industries Minister N Mangi Singh were attacked by militants in separate incidents, official sources told PTI on Wednesday.

Militants hurled powerful grenades and fired at the residence of Mangi Singh, a senior CPI leader who is contesting from the Bishenpur district late on Tuesday night.

The attack occurred while the minister was in a meeting with his party workers at his residence at Kumbi, about 50 km south of Imphal, sources said adding that a party worker was also hurt by the grenade attack.

The minister, however, did not sustain any injuries.

The militants escaped after the attack. The police is investigating whether the incident was connected with monetary demand by militants from the minister, they said.

In another incident late on Tuesday night, unidentified militants attacked Congress candidate, Keisham Meghachandra, of Wangkhem Assembly constituency in Thoubal district. His bodyguard, an IRB jawan, sustained bullet injuries in the attack, police said.

Meghachandra was campaigning for the polls at Yairipok area in Thoubal district when he was attacked, sources told PTI.

The Congress candidate also escaped unhurt while the militants managed to flee.

The incidents took place close on the heels of the grenade attack at the residence of Manipur Agriculture Minister Parijat Singh, another senior CPI leader who is contesting from the Lamlai Assembly constituency in Imphal East district, two weeks ago.
