Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has thrown a new spin on the prime ministerial race by claiming that Manmohan Singh is Congress's PM candidate and not that of the United Progressive Alliance.
"I was the first to ask for Manmohan Singh to be posed as prime ministerial candidate by the UPA. But Congress didn't accept my proposal then how are they posing single candidates now?” he said.
Pawar also said that the UPA) cannot ignore Third Front, the nine-party alliance, after the elections.
"If we do not get majority, we will have to talk to the third front," Pawar, whose NCP is a key constituent of the ruling UPA, told CNN-IBN.
He said the Left Parties, which formed an important constituent of the Third Front, had a significant share of seats in the last Lok Sabha. "Left parties are an important component of the third front who always have about 40-50 members in the Lok Sabha," Pawar said.
He did not rule out Samajwadi Party being a member of the Third Front. "This group of 80 to 100 MPs cannot be ignored," Pawar said.
