Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday urged non-resident Indians from the state to invest funds and expertise in upgrading healthcare.

"I know most of these people love their country very much, I urge them to come and invest money and expertise in healthcare in West Bengal," Banerjee told a function. Stating that Detailed Project Reports (DPR) of 27 of 30 speciality hospitals have been completed, she said "these NRIs can take charge of individual units."

The chief minister, who holds the health portfolio, said that proposals for inviting NRIs will be put on the internet and the process will be looked after by a dedicated team of officials.

She said that medicine banks would be set up for the poor who could not afford them. "Fair price shops will also be set up in major hospitals where medicines will be sold at cheap rates."

She also urged medicine manufacturers to give life saving drugs at lower rates to the poor. She said that government hospitals were better equipped than private hospitals and had better expertise.

"We also have very good doctors who are highly efficient." Banerjee said that since the Trinamool Congress-led government came to power in May last year, a lot of development has taken place in the health sector, over which there were a lot of complaints earlier.

Stating that she worked out on a treadmill for an hour each day before setting out for the state secretariat, she urged people to walk to remain healthy and asked Union Minister of state for Health Sudip Bandopadhyay to hold a walkathon in the metropolis to promote awareness.
