New Delhi: Left parties on Monday asked their cadres to draw lessons from Russian Revolution in the fight against the BJP-led NDA government's "anti-people and pro-corporate" policies and urged them to "unite" against its "assaults" on democracy.

The call came as the parties launched year-long separate celebrations to mark the centenary of the revolution, also known as October Revolution.

"The leader of the revolution, Vladimir Lenin, fought against a regime that was dictatorial. He built the party in accordance with the situation then. Now, we have to fight BJP in defence of democracy," CPI national secretary D Raja said while addressing an event at his party's headquarters here.

"Under the NDA regime, channels are being banned. Minorities, Dalits are being attacked. If one chooses to question the government, he/she is termed as anti-national. We have to stand by the people under attack like Lenin did," he said.

Raja noted that the lessons of the 1917 revolution are "relevant" in current Indian set up, but suggested Left cadre to work out solutions which are India-specific as he contended each country has different problems to deal with.

"No country can replicate revolution of other countries. So, Indian Communists should look for India-specific solutions. As Lenin had said, try to apply Marxism in India-specific way," he added.

Another CPI leader, Atul Kumar Anjan, who too addressed the event, lauded the uprising and Marxism, saying capitalism has not provided alternative to the ideology as yet.

Seeking to underscore the importance of the October Revolution, Anjan said untouchability and gender discrimination would have continued world over had the revolution not taken place.

CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat echoed the view at a similar event organised by her party at Constitution Club here.

She suggested strengthening the communist-socialist movement to fight BJP and noted that socialist forces had defeated Hitler and other fascist forces, from whom the ruling party seeks inspiration.

At another programme, leaders of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) observed capitalism these days has become "reactionary", leading to crisis situation world over.

"So it (capitalism) needs to be overthrown. And it can be overthrown only by proletarian revolution. Russian Revolution was a proletarian revolution from which we need to take

lessons," SUCI(C) Politburo member Krishna Chakraborty said.

The October Revolution is the term used for the uprising which dethroned then Tsarist autocracy in Russia, leading to rise of Soviet Union.
