Even as the Congress-led opposition has stepped up attack on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over the Lalit Modi visa row, NDA constituent Shiv Sena has come out in her support.
An editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana has alleged that a dangerous game of targeting and destabilising the foreign ministry is being played, adding that there’s an attempt to demoralise the government.
The Saamana editorial also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and probe who was making attempts to sully the image of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
Referring to Narendra Modi, the editorial said that the Prime Minister may find himself in the same position as Swaraj does today, adding that other "intelligent ministers" at the Centre may also be targeted.
The Shiv Sena mouthpiece cited instances of targeting of Home Minister Rajnath Singh over a controversy involving his son and of Nitin Gadkari over Purti group of companies to back its claims.
Hitting out at the Congress, the Saamana editorial pointed how former UPA minister Shashi Tharoor was ousted from the Cabinet following an IPL controversy.
It said that while once IPL "Samrat" Lalit Modi had to leave the country for alleged wrongdoing in the cricket extravaganza, several others harming the game continued to remain at the helm, making cricket events a gamble.
This came a day after the Congress went all out against Swaraj and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Lalit Modi visa row. On Monday, the Congress had questioned about PM Modi’s "conduct" in the issue and his "relationship with Lalit Modi".
