New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vice-President and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh resigned from the primary membership of the party on Tuesday.
"I have resigned from BJP. I was given a ticket from Etah from BJP. I am returning that ticket to BJP," said Kalyan Singh.
In a letter to party President Rajnath Singh, the 76-year-old leader, who has been sulking over various issues, said he was feeling "unhappy" but could not compromise by continuing in the party.
He had been named the party candidate from Etah Lok Sabha constituency.
Venting his ire against the top leadership of the party, Singh claimed that "those who are at the helm in BJP don't have any public appeal."
He blamed the party for ignoring senior leaders.
"Senior and experienced leaders are being sidelined in the party. Uma Bharti, Babu Lal Marandi, Madan Lal Khurana all stalwarts of the party have been thrown out of the party," said Singh.
Singh, who had met Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday, had attacked the party last week on various issues.
Mulayam Singh on Monday offered a Lok Sabha seat for his son Rajveer Singh on SP ticket.
Once the Hindutva face of BJP, who was the chief minister when the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992, has been miffed with the party for nominating Ashok Pradhan, sitting MP from Bulandshahr seat.
He has accused Pradhan of sabotaging his son Rajveer Singh's chances in the assembly elections two years ago from Diboi seat in Aligarh district.
Singh had earlier quit the party in 1999.
