New Delhi: Just a day before the first phase of polling for the high voltage Bihar elections, Home Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajnath Singh said every election is a prestige issue.
"Every election is an issue of prestige. The Centre won't stop Bihar's development even if BJP does not come to power," said Singh.
Singh further said that it is the Central government's duty to ensure the development of all states. "Rs 1.25 crore package is given to Bihar even if BJP does not come to power. We will fulfill our commitment. Bihar will not be left behind whether we win or not," said Singh.
On not declaring chief ministerial candidate, Singh said, "Every political party has its own strategy to fight elections and never in the history of the BJP it has projected the CM candidate. Our Central Parliamentary Board will take decision on the chief ministerial candidate on the basis of people's verdict."
The Bihar Assembly elections is a litmus test for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and all the senior leaders are on their feet to woo people. After massive mauling in the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP is not leaving any stone unturned to defeat JDU-RJD-Congress Mahagathbandhan.
Bihar will vote in five phases on October 12, 16, 28, November 1 and 5. Counting of votes will take place on November 8. The current Assembly expires on November 29.
On the question of ripple effect of the result in the five-phased polls and its repercussion on the upcoming polls, Singh said, "If a party wins the effect is there but the degree may vary from state to state. I do not believe that if a party wins in one state then it win elections nationwide."
The remarks assume significance as West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu will go to polls in 2016 and elections in Uttar Pradesh are due in 2017.
