Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Left Front and the Congress were enemies in Kerala but were “BFFs” outside, a day after the Communist Party of India (CPI) named Annie Raja as its candidate for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat currently held by Rahul Gandhi. News18 reported on Monday that Rahul was likely to leave his Wayanad parliamentary seat and could contest from two constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls: one from either Karnataka or Telangana and one from Uttar Pradesh.

At a rally in Thiruvananthapuram, PM Modi while referring to Rahul Gandhi said the Left wanted the “yuvraj” (crown prince) of the Congress to be ousted from Wayanad.

“These two parties unleash violence on each other, they attack each other… In Kerala, they are each other’s enemies but outside Kerala, they are BFFs- Best Friend Forever…friends who sit and have tea and biscuits together,” PM Modi said. “These people are advising the crown prince to stay out of Kerala.”

While the Congress and the Left are bitter rivals in Kerala, they are allies in West Bengal as part of the opposition INDIA bloc that aims to take on the BJP and its associates in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Prime Minister also tore into the Left and Congress over “dynastic politics”. “Congress and its other communist alliances have only one priority. They only let their family rule the country. For them, the welfare of their family is superior to the welfare of Indians,” he said.

PM Modi’s remarks came a day after the CPI, the second-largest coalition partner in Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front, announced candidates for four seats in the Lok Sabha polls, picking senior party leader Annie Raja for Wayanad.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said Rahul Gandhi should take on the BJP instead of fighting a Left candidate.

“CPI(M) has declared its candidate for the seat in Wayanad, Comrade Annie Raja, who has played a key role in ‘Mahila Andolan’,” she said. “Rahul Gandhi and the Congress need to think; they say that their fight is against BJP. In Kerala, if you come and fight against CPI(M), what message are you giving? So they need to think about their seat once again.”
