CPM wooing Jamaat in Kerala: Congress
Congress said CPM must make it clear if the party had any understanding with the Jamaat-e-Islami for Kerala polls.

Kochi: Congress in Kerala on Monday said CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan must make it clear if the party had any understanding with the Jamaat-e-Islami for the April 13 Assembly polls.

CPM, which had some time ago described Jamaat-e-Islami as a fundamentalist outfit, was now indulging in "opportunist politics" by wooing it on the eve of the polls, Kerala PCC President Ramesh Chennithala alleged.

"In all the constituencies, CPM has some sort of an understanding with the Jamaat," Chennithala told reporters, adding that the Marxist party had thought of such a partnership, anticipating a massive defeat.

Asked about CPM leaders' claim that IUML leader P K Kunhalikutty had been offered the post of Deputy Chief Ministership if UDF was voted to power, Chennithala said it was "baseless".

"There is no such demand from IUML and the party has not asked for such a post. Deputy Chief Ministership has not been promised to league," he said.

Hoping for a good performance by Congress-led UDF, he said the front would romp home with at least 100 seats. This would be a repeat of the Panchayat and Lok Sabha polls, he claimed.

UDF was facing elections to build "a new Kerala and have put forth a development agenda before the people for the state," he said.

Hameed Vanimel, state political secretary of the Jamaat, had quit all his positions in the organisation following reports about an understanding with CPM.
