Agra: The uncertainty over film actor and MP Raj Babbar's candidature in the Lok Sabha elections is over as he has been named the Congress nominee from Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh.
The Congress on Wednesday released its first list of 24 candidates from Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha elections, including its president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
With his present constituency Agra city seat declared reserved in the delimitation process, Babbar had to move to Fatehpur Sikri, which he had been nurturing for past six months.
The candidates of other political parties for the Agra city seat have already been named. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had announced its candidate Kunwar Chand Vakeel more than a year ago. Similarly for the Fatehpur Sikri seat the BSP declared Seema Upadhaya's name (state Energy minister Ramvir Upadhaya's wife) a year ago.
Samajwadi Party is fielding former union minister and party general secretary Ramji Lal Suman in Agra city. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Rama Shankar Katheria's name for Agra city seat. Katheria is a Hindi lecturer at the K M Institute and has been a staunch Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker.
Babbar faces tough competition from Upadhyaya and BJP's Aridaman Singh, who as a member of the erstwhile royal family of Bah has solid vote banks to feel confident.
Agra goes to the polls on May 7
