Bhopal: As Madhya Pradesh awaits counting on December 11, the Congress has raised concern over the security of EVMs. Two senior leaders of the party, Arun Yadav and Suresh Pachauri, on Sunday visited strong room at Bhopal’s Old Jail. They were joined by PC Sharma and other party workers to assess the security arrangements there.
The leaders demanded the security to be stepped up with an increased surveillance around the strong rooms. They also demanded probe as the EVMs from Sagar, Khandwa and Pandhana had reached the strong room hours after the polling concluded on Wednesday.
The Congress had on Saturday approached the Election Commission raising the issue of EVM safety, while the BJP called it a malicious campaign from the opposition.
MP Chief Electoral Officer VL Kantha Rao reviewed the security arrangements at Old Jail. Rao said the EVMs that reached late from Sagar were the reserve machines. Reports have been sought from Khandwa and Pandhana from the Returning Officers, Rao said.
The administration on Sunday also installed metal detectors at the strong room at Old jail in Bhopal.
Congress Campaign Committee chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia said that over 1,500 EVMs stopped with minutes after the voting began on November 28 and termed it suspicious.
Satna constituency was also in the eye of storm on polling day as several EVMs malfunctioned causing delays in voting.
Taking a jibe at the Congress, the BJP state president Rakesh Singh alleged the Congress was planning to shift the buck on EVMs when it loses election. Raising fingers at constitutional bodies is a Congress tradition, Singh said.
