With just a couple of months to go before the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has done a major rejig of the organisational heads of its morchas (wings). The party released the list of all the new organisational appointments late on Wednesday evening.
The BJP’s Yuva Morcha will be led by the experienced party general secretary Sunil Bansal. He takes over the reins from fellow party general secretary Tarun Chugh. In the upcoming election, the party will focus particularly on the youth and first-time voters. Bansal, who is extremely close to the BJP top leadership, will be spearheading the party’s initiative through its youth wing. At present, the national president of the BJP Yuva Morcha is Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.
Another crucial responsibility in the organisation has been given to yet another general secretary, Vinod Tawde. Tawde will be the organisation incharge of the OBC Morcha. Reaching out to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) has been high on the agenda of the Narendra Modi government. Even in the last reshuffle by the Modi government, special emphasis was laid on the representation of the OBC community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself is an OBC leader. Tawde, who was brought from Maharashtra to be a party general secretary, assumes a couple of key responsibilities in the central organisational structure.
After his removal as BJP state president for Telangana, Bandi Sanjay was recently made party general secretary, in JP Nadda’s team at the centre. He too has been made an organisation incharge of the Kisan Morcha.
Among other appointments announced by the party, Tarun Chugh has been made organisation incharge of the Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha. The new Scheduled Tribe (ST) Morcha incharge is Radha Mohan Das Agarwal. Dushyant Gautam will now be in charge of the Minority Morcha. Party vice president Baijayant Jay Panda will have the responsibility of the Mahila Morcha, which is the women’s wing.
In the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, the party is likely to make many new appointments soon, including the announcement of several committees for better election management. However, as of now, three general secretaries assume extremely important roles in the BJP’s scheme of things. Sunil Bansal, Tarun Chugh, and Vinod Tawde have multiple roles and responsibilities.
The three are also in charge of the Lok Sabha Pravas of the saffron party. This is to coordinate activities of the party in the 160 Lok Sabha seats identified as “weak” since the party has not been able to win them in the last two elections. Senior leaders of the party, JP Nadda and Amit Shah, have done pravas on these seats at least once in the last two years.
This apart, Bansal, Chugh, and Tawde are also an important part of the committee that has been formed to reach out to women and the youth by holding programmes across the country. They are also a part of the committee that has been formed to oversee the joinings to the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.
Apart from the organisational responsibilities, while Sunil Bansal is incharge of West Bengal and co-incharge of Telangana, Vinod Tawde is incharge of the eastern state of Bihar. Tarun Chugh, who is incharge of the party in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir is also co-incharge of Telangana.
