Pathankot: If the Congress wins the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, then retired defence personnel will be provided reservation in government jobs while an ex-servicemen cell, headed by a former defence official holding a cabinet rank, will be part of the Punjab Chief Minister's Office.
The above promises were made by Congress' chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh during a meeting with ex-servicemen in Pathankot on Wednesday.
Singh, himself a retired Army officer, also promised to set up a special judicial cell for ex-servicemen and NRIs for speedy judicial recourse during the Coffee with Captain event, which was organised by Prashant Kishor's Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), which is strategising the Congress election campaign.
He also announced that 300 free units of electricity for people below poverty line, strict implementation of government policy providing jobs to the family members of a martyred defence person in the line of duty, regularisation of salaries for ex-servicemen and timely payments of monetary benefits associated with gallantry awards.
The Captain blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not implementing the One-Rank-One-Pension scheme in letter and spirit. "I have, I am and will be with you on OROP. We had started it, but Modi ji has stopped it. We are with you on this and will fight it till the end," he said.
Major General RK Kaushal (retd) assured wholehearted support of ex-servicemen to the Captain in his endeavour to oust the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance from power in the state.
The event was attended more than 2000 ex-servicemen and members from 12 ex-servicemen associations like the Indian Ex Services league and All India Defence Brotherhood.
