Ruturaj Gaikwad Becomes 3rd Indian to Depart For a Diamond Duck In T20Is
The diamond duck against Australia put Ruturaj Gaikwad in the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Amit Mishra on this list.

Indian cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad made some unwanted history during India’s match against Australia on November 23. India are currently hosting Australia in a five-match T20I bilateral series. The first game between the two cricket powerhouses at Visakhapatnam turned into a nail-biting thriller with India narrowly taking the win.

However, it turned out to be a forgettable match for Ruturaj Gaikwad as he became only the third Indian batter to be dismissed for a diamond duck in T20Is. Gaikwad had to depart from the cricket pitch having faced no balls against the Mathew Wade-led side on Thursday. The Indian youngster was unfortunately caught in a run-out affair by Nathan Ellis. This saw him join the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Amit Mishra on this list.

India were able to get a perfect start in their T20I series against Australia with a two-wicket victory. The match started with India winning the toss and deciding to bowl first in the game. Australia were in control during their innings as Steve Smith smashed a half-century for his side before Jos Inglis stepped up with a scintillating knock of 110 runs in 50 balls. The momentum continued to favour the Aussies, especially after Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed in the penultimate ball of the first over during the second innings. Gaikwad had gotten into a terrible mix-up with Yashasvi Jaiswal whose attempt to take a second run led to the run-out dismissal. India were able to recover from this shock, thanks to a heroic innings from Suryakumar Yadav who scored 80 runs in 42 balls. In the end, Rinku Singh finished the match with his unbeaten 22-run knock.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah was the first Indian player to be dismissed at a diamond duck in T20Is. It was back on February 9, 2016, when Bumrah had to leave the cricket pitch without facing any balls. It was the match against Sri Lanka at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Less than a year later, Amit Mishra was dismissed in a similar fashion against England. That match took place in January 2017 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur. A total of 21 Indian players have gotten out at diamond ducks across the three main formats of cricket. This list mostly features bowlers including Roger Binny, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. However, some shocking names like Rahul Dravid, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Virat Kohli can also be spotted on this list.

Recently, Ruturaj Gaikwad led India to an Asian Games gold medal earlier this year. He had already featured against Australia once during their three-match ODI series ahead of the World Cup. The young cricketing sensation will now be looking to make a solid comeback in his next game against the Aussies. Meanwhile, India continue to find the right squad combination for the T20I World Cup that’s to be played in the United States and the West Indies.
