A 19-year-old engineering student of IIIT Basar allegedly died by suicide on Sunday, police said. Also known as Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), the university is located in the Nirmal district of Telangana. The first-year student was found hanging in his room in the hostel building on the university campus, police added. He was a native of Nagarkurnool district of the state.

According to the police, the student was depressed after the death of his mother a month ago. He had also told his family members that he did not want to continue his course at the university, police said based on a preliminary investigation. No suicide note was found, the police added. Further investigations are on.

Earlier this year, in August, another student of the IIIT allegedly died by suicide. According to the police the student was found hanging in the hostel room on the varsity’s campus. The 17-year-old was a student in the Pre University Course I. The student was suspected of having ended his life after he reportedly grew homesick, a police official had said. The student was a native of Sangareddy district and had joined the institute only a week ago. While on June 13, a female student of the Pre University Course I of the institute was found hanging in the bathroom on the varsity’s campus.

Talking about the increase in the number of student suicide cases, the Supreme Court of India stated that parents, not the institutions are to be blamed. Parents put excessive pressure on students to perform well in competitive exams. The top court said that blaming the mushrooming of coaching institutes for the increased suicides among students, particularly in Kota, was incorrect since it was the high expectations placed by parents in a competitive surrounding that drove youngsters to end their lives.
