Gunmen open fire on the JUI-F chief's convoy in Dera Ismail Khan. Terror group Tehreek-e-Taliban role suspected by security agencies.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy was attacked on Sunday as unknown gunmen opened fire on the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leader’s convoy in Dera Ismail Khan.

The senior leader was returning from an election campaign when the attack occurred. People familiar with the developments told CNN-News18 that it is too early to assess who led the attacks but pointed fingers towards the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and elements who do not want the elections to be held on February 8.

The people mentioned above said that the Pakistani interior ministry also issued a threat alert on December 29.

Initial probe shows that there were two vehicles of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s convoy which came to Yarak Toll Plaza to refuel while an attack on the toll plaza was underway. A bullet hit one of the vehicles but Maulana Fazlur Rehman was not in the vehicle and was in his village in Abdul Khel, people familiar with the developments said.

His party spokesperson, Atif Ghauri, condemned the attack and demanded an immediate investigation in a statement. He pointed out that there is no level playing field for his party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
