Coronavirus Updates: India reported 3,207 new Covid cases taking the total tally of infections to 4,31,05,401, while the active cases dipped to 20,403, according to the health ministry data updated on Monday

 Coronavirus Updates: India logged 3,207 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,31,05,401, while the active cases dipped to 20,403, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday. The death toll climbed to 5,24,093 with 29 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.05 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was 98.74 per cent, the ministry said.

Even as cases have been increasing across the country in the past four weeks, there were just around 20 deaths from the virus reported in the week ending May 8. The weekly death toll is the lowest since March 2020, when the pandemic first hit India and just a few cases were being reported each week in India.

Here are the latest coronavirus news updates:

• Maharashtra on Monday reported 121 fresh cases of coronavirus, down from 224 the previous day, while no new death linked to the infection was registered in the state, the health department said. With this, the state’s overall Covid-19 tally rose to 78,79,278, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,47,847, it said. The state had reported 224 coronavirus cases and one fatality on Sunday. Mumbai recorded 63 coronavirus cases, the department said, accounting for more than half of the new patients detected in the state in the last 24 hours.

• Genetically predetermined limits on the immune system may be the key to why Covid-19 has such a devastating effect on the elderly, according to a modeling study. Researchers at the University of Washington (UW) in the US noted that the immune system’s ability to combat Covid-19, like any infection, largely depends on the replication of the immune cells effective at destroying the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the disease.

• One new Covid-19 case was registered in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, taking the Union territory’s tally to 10,038 on Monday, a health bulletin said. The fresh infection was detected during contact tracing, it said.

• The daily positivity rate was recorded as 0.95 per cent and the weekly positivity rate as 0.82 per cent, according to the ministry.

• India recorded 3,207 new Covid-19 cases, 29 deaths (out of which 26 are backlog numbers) in the last 24 hours. There were 3,410 recoveries leading to a fall of 232 in active caseload.

• A total of 24 students of the city-based National Institute of Design (NID) have tested positive for Covid-19 in three days, with 16 cases being reported on Sunday alone, officials said. The authorities have declared the new boys’ hostel and another block of the premier design institute as micro containment zones in an effort to contain the spread of the virus, an official of the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

• Punjab reported 23 fresh Covid cases on Sunday that took the infection tally to 7,59,905, according to a medical bulletin. No covid-related death was reported in the past 24-hours and the death toll stands at 17,751, it said. There were 284 active cases in the state, it said. Twenty-three patients recovered from the infection, taking the overall recoveries to 7,41,870, the bulletin said.

• The death toll in Tamil Nadu stood at 38,025 as no fatality was recorded in the last 24 hours, a medical bulletin said. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease rose to 34,15,850 as 68 more people were discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 478 active cases.
