The trailer of the much-anticipated Netflix psychological thriller series Ripley is finally out. Headlined by Fleabag fame Andrew Scott, the limited web show is adapted from novelist Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr Ripley. The trailer dropped by the makers on January 22 reveals Andrew Scott slipping into the shoes of the titular character of Tom Ripley. Originally, the Steven Zaillian directorial was scheduled to premiere on Showtime. Later on, the digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix, in a sale between the companies. Ripley, an eight-episode series will be released on Netflix on April 4.
The black and white trailer opens with Andrew Scott aka Tom Ripley searching through a rack of books. “You are a very hard man to find. No address, phone, office," says a person to him. It shows Ripley on the edge, in search of something. From pasting his picture to a passport for illegal travelling to detectives knocking at his doors for his suspicious tendencies, Ripley is portrayed to be a man full of secrets. He goes from one place to another through boat and train rides, sporting that mysterious smile throughout. The trailer gives away almost nothing about the plot. But with Andrew Scott’s terrific on-screen presence and quiet demeanour, Ripley looks like a promising, edge-of-the-seat watch with ample unexpected twists and turns.
Ripley is one of Patricia Highsmith’s best-selling novels. It tells the tale of Tom Ripley, a “grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York". Hired by an affluent man, he is sent off to Italy to convince the person’s vagabond son to come home. However, Ripley’s acceptance of the offbeat profession leads him onto a complicated life of deceit, fraud, and gruesome murders. Besides Andrew Scott, Ripley also stars Johnny Flynn in the role of the wealthy man’s son, Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge Sherwood who slowly grows suspicious of Ripley. Additional cast members include Maurizio Lombardi, Elliot Sumner, John Malkovich, and Margherita Buy.
Earlier, Tom Ripley’s character found its way into the big screens with director Anthony Minghella’s 1999 crime-thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley, based on the novel of the same title. While Matt Damon played the lead role in the film, Jude Law essayed the role of Dickie Greenleaf, and Gwyneth Paltrow co-starred as Marge Sherwood. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards.
