When Rekha Said She Owes Her Acting Career To Amitabh Bachchan: 'He's Like My Inner Conscience...'
Rekha said that Amitabh Bachchan never directly taught her acting or gave her tips on scenes. Instead, his presence, professionalism, and spirit were enough to inspire her.

As Amitabh Bachchan turns 82 today, we take a trip down memory lane to an insightful interview where veteran actress Rekha opened up about her deep admiration for the legendary actor. In a 2006 interview with Filmfare magazine, Rekha reflected on the profound impact Amitabh had on her career and life. The two iconic stars have shared the screen in unforgettable films like Namak Haraam, Khoon Pasina, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and their last film together, Silsila, which left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema.

Speaking of Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha reminisced, “Memories come rushing back like drops of rain pelting my head. Every drop releases a frisson of feelings.” She recalled being captivated by his magnetic performance in Parwana and credited him with shaping her as an actor. “Whatever I am as an actor, I owe 100 percent to him. I just soaked in whatever he had to offer by simply observing him.”

Rekha said that Amitabh never directly taught her acting or gave her tips on scenes. Instead, his presence, professionalism, and spirit were enough to inspire her. She compared their relationship to the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition, where she learned from him simply by being around him. “Amitji created the perfect environment for me just by being himself.”

Despite the widespread fascination with their on-screen chemistry and personal bond, Rekha was quick to point out that Amitabh was often unaware of the impact he had on those around him. “He was totally oblivious of the influence he had on my life or anybody else’s.”

In what she described as a fan’s outpouring, Rekha expressed how Amitabh’s sense of integrity and authenticity influenced her deeply, both as an actor and a human being. His baritone voice, iconic screen presence, and impeccable performances have long been celebrated, but to her, he is much more than that. “He’s like my inner conscience that guides me through life and my performances,” Rekha said. “You may not see it, but you feel it all the time.”

For Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan remains an unwavering force, a guiding spirit whose influence continues to shape her, even decades after they last shared the screen together.
