Timothee Chalamet is gearing up to star as the iconic musician Bob Dylan in the highly anticipated biopic, directed by James Mangold. Currently in production, the film, titled A Complete Unknown, is slated for a Christmas release. According to the makers, the movie will hit theatres on December 25, 2024. The official announcement teased, “A glimpse of the future: A Complete Unknown, a film by James Mangold, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, coming exclusively to theatres December 25th.”

While Chalamet will play the iconic singer, he will be using his own vocals for the role. Recently, Searchlight Pictures released a trailer for the biopic, featuring Dylan’s classic “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” alongside glimpses of the singer’s influential life and career.

The release date for A Complete Unknown aligns with two other major films premiering on December 25, 2024: Robert Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King.

“New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide,” the official synopsis reads. The film has been slightly adapted from Elijah Wald’s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric,” while the title is a phrase from the singer’s folk rock anthem, “Like a Rolling Stone.”

Mangold, who also co-wrote the script with Jay Cocks, once spoke about his motivation for telling the story. “It’s such an amazing time in American culture, and the story of a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with, like, $2 in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years — first being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and then, of course, kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief,” he said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Besides Chalamet, the film also features Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Dan Fogler and Boyd Holbrook.
