In the initial days after the pandemic era, many films failed to do well at the box office. The still lingering threat of the coronavirus and the boom of the OTT sector were blamed for the dismal performance of films. While post-pandemic Hindi films like Sooryavanshi, Bhool Bhulaiya 2 and The Kashmir Files did exceptionally good business, many films have failed at the box office even in recent times.
The recent high-budget action thriller Bade Miyan Chote Miyan had a lot of expectations but tanked at the box office. However, do you know which film is the biggest disaster in the history of Indian cinema? It is a 2023 film and starred Arjun Kapoor in the lead.
The Lady Killer, a crime thriller film starring Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, came and sank without a trace in a way that left many unaware of the film’s existence. Upon its release, the film was met with harsh criticism and earned only Rs 38,000 on its first day, selling just 293 tickets across India. This made it the most significant box office failure in Indian cinema history. Made on a budget of Rs 45 crore, its final gross was an unbelievably low Rs 70,000.
The film was released on November 3, 2023, with only 12 shows nationwide. It is reported that the movie was released incomplete due to cost overruns, rain in Uttarakhand, and a lack of reshoots. As a result, the production team had to rely on several editing cuts and voiceovers. The incomplete shoots and the voiceover received a lot of criticism from both critics and audiences and the film was panned. However, the performances of Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Priyanka Bose were singled out for praise. After the most dismal performance by an Indian film at the box office, the film is now arriving on Netflix soon.
