“In ‘Teenagers 17/18’ movie Hari and Deepa, both 17, make a video in an empty classroom, and it ends up online. Come Monday, they’re called to the principal’s office. The school wants to expel Deepa and keep Hari, but Abdul, the gym teacher, raises concerns about bias. Things get messy, and everyone’s lives are turned upside down,” read the synopsis, mentioned on Aha.
Directed and produced by Prithvi Konanur, the film stars Sherlyn Bhosle, Neeraj Mathews, Rekha Kudligi, Sudha Belawadi and Bhavani Prakash in important roles. The film follows the story of Deepa, played by Sherlyn Bhosale, who comes from a Dalit background, and Hari, played by Neeraj Mathew, who is from a privileged Brahmin family.
Earlier, as reported by The New Indian Express, Konanur said, “While that incident is the initial premise, it’s not central to the film. Rather, the film takes a direction that people have rarely seen. I didn’t want to do a straightforward drama but also make the legal intricacies and police procedures surrounding the incident central to the story. I would say that it leans more toward a thriller than a drama. It’s a story that is real and something that is rooted in our society. Yet it has an intriguing plot with all these twists and turns.”
Hadinelentu is a Kannada mystery thriller film released in theatres in January 2024. The film was written by Prithvi Konanur and Anupama Hegde. It was edited by Shivakumara Swamy, while the cinematography was done by Arjun Raja and produced under the banner of Konanur Productions.
With the inclusion of complex issues like caste bias, teen sexuality, and socioeconomic disparities, the film has garnered several accolades across the world. Hadinelentu has been screened at various international film festivals like the New York Indian Film Festival, the Ottawa Indian Film Festival and the Melbourne Film Festival.
