We have often seen that some films do not make big money at the box office but get critical acclaim. Similarly, some of them might not get the critical acclaim but they perform well on OTT platforms. In the last few years, we have seen several films that tanked at the box office. Surprisingly, these films garnered a lot of love when they made their way to the OTT platforms. This has been a huge source of respite for the filmmakers. With the advent of OTT platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix, filmmakers can hope for a brilliant second innings for their films. Here’s a list of films that bombed at the box office but attained amazing reviews upon their release at OTT.
1. Sonchiriya (March 1, 2019)
Sonchiriya starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, and others was produced on a budget of Rs 22 crore. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the film failed to recover even half of its budgetary amount at the box office. This film, however, attained great reviews upon its release on the OTT platform Zee 5.
2. Thappad (February 28, 2020)
Thappad starring Taapsee Pannu, Dia Mirza, and others flopped at the box office primarily due to the advent of the coronavirus. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, it could barely manage to earn Rs 43.77 crore but attained accolades upon its release on Amazon Prime.
3. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (March 19, 2021)
Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, failed at the box office. It, however, garnered positive word-of-mouth upon its streaming on Amazon Prime. This film boasted of a stellar star cast comprising Jaideep Ahlawat, Parineeti Chopra, Arjun Kapoor, and others.
4. Laal Singh Chaddha (August 11, 2022)
Laal Singh Chaddha, the remake of the film Forrest Gump tanked at the box office. Directed by Advait Chandan and starring stalwarts like Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and others, this film received mixed reviews. It, however, earned accolades for its streaming on Netflix.
5. An Action Hero (December 2, 2022)
An Action Hero, directed by Anirudh Iyer, performed badly at the box office. This film starred actors Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaideep Ahlawat, and others. It received praise after its streaming on Netflix.
6. Dhak Dhak (October 13, 2023)
Directed by Tarun Dudeja, Dhak Dhak couldn’t perform well at the box office. Starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, Dia Mirza, and others, this film received praise post the streaming on Netflix.
