Rishab Shetty BREAKS Silence on His 'Bollywood Shows India in Bad Light' Comment: 'It Was Twisted'
At the IIFA Utsavam, Rishab Shetty addresses his controversial 'Bollywood shows India in bad light' comment, claiming it was misinterpreted. He plans to offer a full explanation soon.

Rishab Shetty has finally spoken out about the controversy surrounding his remarks on Bollywood allegedly portraying India in a “bad light” at international film festivals. The Kantara star, who made waves in August with his interview on MetroSaga, had expressed frustration over how Bollywood films are often selected for global events but seem to show India in a “bad light.” His comments stirred a massive online debate, drawing mixed reactions from netizens.

Speaking in Kannada during the interview, Shetty reportedly said, “Indian films, especially Bollywood, show India in a bad light. These art films are invited to global events and given a red carpet. My nation, my state, my language—my pride. Why not take it on a positive note globally, and that’s what I try to do.” This statement immediately went viral, sparking criticism from several quarters, particularly Bollywood supporters.

However, at the IIFA Utsavam 2024, when asked about the controversy during his appearance on the green carpet, Rishab Shetty clarified that his words were taken out of context. “Main kya bola tha wo thoda idhar udhar ho gaya. Clarification or explanation aagey main ek achi si jagah baith kar baat karenge (What I said got a bit twisted. I’ll give a clarification or explanation later, when we sit down in a better setting and talk),” Shetty told reporters in Abu Dhabi.

At the IIFA Utsavam, Shetty was honoured for his “Outstanding Excellence in Kannada Cinema,” marking yet another milestone in his flourishing career. The actor-director also celebrated his recent National Film Award win for his critically acclaimed performance in Kantara earlier this year.

Looking ahead, fans are eagerly awaiting Rishab Shetty’s next project, Kantara 2, officially titled Kantara: Chapter 1. The much-anticipated prequel to the original Kantara will delve deeper into the lore of the Panchurli Deiva during the Kadamba era. With Rishab returning as both the lead actor and director, and Ajaneesh Loknath reprising his role as the music director, expectations are high for another blockbuster when the film releases in 2025.
