American actor and comedian Damon Wayans Jr., known for his roles in Happy Endings, New Girl, and more, recently shared his thoughts on the portrayal of sex scenes in films. The actor, currently starring in the Netflix rom-com Players, expressed a desire for more realistic depictions of intimate moments on screen. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Wayans Jr. discussed his views on the portrayal of physical intimacy in movies. He criticised the often unrealistic nature of sex scenes, noting that they frequently depict characters as having mind-blowing experiences that don’t reflect real-life encounters.
He expressed a desire to see more authentic representations of sex, noting the importance of portraying moments that resonate with viewers’ own experiences.
“I think what I would lose is how good the sex is in all the movies because they’re always like rolling off each other, like, ‘That was crazy.’ … It’s wack a lot of the time,” Wayans added. He said that he would prefer to see “stuff that happens in real life.”
Players, the film in which Wayans Jr. stars, follows the story of Mack, played by Gina Rodriguez, a sportswriter in New York City who finds herself reevaluating her approach to relationships. The film explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery, all set against the backdrop of the bustling city.
During his interview, Wayans Jr. also opened up about his evolving perspective on romantic comedies. While he previously disliked the predictable nature of many rom-coms, he found himself drawn to the unique storytelling of Players.
“I already knew how the movie was going to end by the second scene, even when reading the script, but the journey is what kind of differentiates it. So I’m cool with that staying the same,” he said.
Interestingly, Wayans Jr. is not the only actor to have recently commented on the depiction of physical intimacy in movies. Henry Cavill, best known for his role as Superman, also shared his thoughts on the subject on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Cavill expressed discomfort with filming intimate scenes, suggesting that they are often overused and do not always serve a meaningful purpose in storytelling. He argued that the audience’s imagination can be more powerful than explicit scenes, leading to a more impactful viewing experience.
