While Ilaiyaraaja focused on obtaining copyright for his songs, Vairamuthu pondered whether music outweighs lyrics in a song. However, Ilaiyaraaja’s brother, Gangai Amaran, disagreed with this notion. As a result, the issue has intensified over time.
Music composer James Vasanthan shared his views on the matter, saying, “Language is like the listener of a song that understands music. Language can be altered. We don’t need to analyse it excessively. These debates only arise when there’s a personal clash about who is more significant. Let’s keep it as a personal opinion. We love both songs and music. Music and language are interconnected. Without music, there’s no language, and without language, there’s no music.”
James Vasanthan says, “Vairamuthu and Ilaiyaraaja have been in a feud for several days. Let’s keep their issues private. Someone with talent is sure to get their first opportunity somewhere”.
He says, “Songs are a crucial element of Indian cinema. I hold deep admiration for Ilayaraja’s music, and I’ve devoted significant time to listening to his compositions over the years. Through his music, I’ve gained a profound understanding of the art form”.
Formerly close friends, Ilaiyaraaja and Vairamuthu have recently become distant due to a disagreement. This feud has been ongoing for some time. However, in a recent interview, James Vasanthan expressed his view, suggesting that escalating this private dispute into a public feud is inappropriate.
James Vasanthan stated that Vairamuthu wouldn’t have become a songwriter if Ilaiyaraaja hadn’t allowed him to write the song”.
Gangai Amaran stated that if Panchu Arunachalam hadn’t given Ilaiyaraaja the chance to compose music for Annakkili, he might not have pursued a career in music composition. He stressed that talent will always shine through, regardless of where it comes from. On the other hand, James Vasanthan pointed out that songs have both lyrics and music. He suggested appreciating them without stirring up unnecessary controversy.
The ongoing conflict between Vairamuthu and Ilaiyaraaja is stirring discussions on social media. Rajinikanth’s fans are now showing their backing for Ilaiyaraaja. Ilaiyaraaja has also sent a legal notice given the unapproved use of his song in the title teaser of Coolie.
