Superstar Mohanlal turned 64 years old today. On his big day, several industry biggies and millions of fans poured heartfelt birthday wishes. Actor Mammootty, who has worked on many films with Mohanlal, also shared a wholesome birthday post for his beloved friend and colleague. The veteran actor shared a photo of him kissing Mohanlal on his cheek, as he captioned the photo, “Happy Birthday Dear Lal". Mohanlal is often called “Lal" in the industry.
Mohanlal and Mammootty first shared the screen in the 1984 Malayalam film Paavam Poornima. They have since worked on iconic films like Anubandham (1985), Vartha Kariyila Kattu Pole (1986), Harikrishnans (1998), Narasimham (2000), and more. One of their most recent projects was Pathonpatham Noottandu, a 2022 action-period drama, in which the duo voice-covered as narrators.
In 2019, Mammootty was the special guest at the trailer launch of Lucifer, the directorial debut of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran that had Mohanlal in the lead role. Mammootty is 9 years older than Mohanlal and interestingly, their film debuts were also 9 years apart.
Even though both superstars have worked in the same industry for decades, they have maintained a strong bond and resisted competitiveness. In a 2020 interview with Mathrubhumi, Mohanlal said, “There is no battle between Mammootty and me in the film industry. I think there may be a healthy competition between us. I strongly believe I won’t be able to play such great roles played by Mammootty with such intensity. Then why should I compete with him? Actually, when I watched his good roles, I used to crave similar roles. I don’t think it is wrong. A competition turns negative when one competes to destroy someone."
Actor Kamal Haasan who is Mohanlal’s contemporary, also wished the actor. Haasan wrote on X, “Lead man for forty years among a very critical and discerning audience. 400 films? Some might exclaim in disbelief. I, on the contrary, am looking forward to him beat Mr. Prem Nazir’s record of 500 films. On his birthday, that is my best wish to him. Best of health to you, Mr. Mohanlal, to break many more records."

Even after turning 64, Mohanlal has a lineup of projects. He is currently preparing his directorial debut film, Barroz. It is based on the novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure by Jijo Punnoose. He will also be seen in the lead role in the political thriller film L2: Empuraan and the fantasy action drama Vrushabha.
