A petition has been filed in the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court, demanding a ban on Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film Vettaiyan. The upcoming Tamil action drama film is all set for release on October 10. The petition, filed by Madurai resident Palanivelu, is regarding that specific dialogues in the film’s trailer promoting encounter killings should either be removed or muted. Palanivelu claims these dialogues could influence normal people, leading to the acceptance of illegal encounters.
The petitioner asked for the makers of Vettaiyan to either delete or mute the dialogues about such encounters in the film. The petition was heard by Justice Subramanian and Justice Victoria Gowri recently. The judges, who heard the case, ordered notices to be sent to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Lyca Productions [the production house] regarding the matter. They refused to impose an interim ban against the film, Vettaiyan. The case has been adjourned and will be heard later based on the responses from the CBFC and Lyca Productions.
Meanwhile, the trailer, which showcases Rajinikanth as an encounter specialist, has sparked both public interest and controversy. The narrative revolves around the protagonist’s struggle to bring justice following the rape and murder of a woman, with the film exploring themes of law enforcement and justice. The trailer also hints at a clash of ideologies, with Amitabh Bachchan portraying a character opposing such extreme methods. Take a look at the trailer:
Vettaiyan is directed by TJ Gnanavel and stars Rajinikanth in the titular role, while Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Dushara Vijayan and Ritika Singh will be seen in supporting roles.
Vettaiyan is produced by Subaskaran’s Lyca Productions. The music and background score are composed by Anirudh Ravichander in his fourth collaboration with Rajinikanth after Petta (2019), Darbar (2020), and Jailer (2023); maiden with Gnanavel. The audio rights were acquired by Sony Music India.
Reports suggest that Red Giant Movies acquired the distribution rights of Vettaiyan in Tamil Nadu. Lyca Productions will distribute themselves overseas. Sree Gokulam Movies acquired the distribution rights of the film in Kerala.
