Mammootty was said to be in the race with two films: Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and Rorschach. In Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, he played a lead role that earned him the Best Actor award at the 53rd Kerala State Film Awards in 2023. Rorschach featured Mammootty as Luke Anthony, a complex and intense character. Fans were hopeful that these performances would earn him national recognition.
Padmakumar noted that Lijo Jose Pellissery’s 2022 film Nanpakal Neerathu Mayakkam was considered strong content. Since it wasn’t submitted, it didn’t compete for the award. Meanwhile, Rishabh Shetty’s performance in Kantara received widespread acclaim, making him a deserving winner of the Best Actor Award.
