Inside Out 2 by Disney and Pixar is the first movie of the year that grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Walt Disney Co. stated on June 30 that it achieved that milestone in the shortest amount of time for any animated picture in history—less than three weeks after its premiere. The animated follow-up has brought in $469.3 million (almost Rs 4000 crores) in North America and $545.5 million (over Rs 4,500 crores) abroad, for a total of $1.015 billion (almost Rs 8,500 crores) globally (per Variety). Additionally, it is the eleventh animated movie ever to achieve that feat. The $1 billion mark is coveted, as the last film to reach the mark was Barbie in 2023.
Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution, Tony Chambers, stated in a press release on Sunday, “We’re absolutely thrilled to have reached this phenomenal milestone in record time, and it once again proves that global audiences will come out for a great movie.”
With a domestic gross of $151 million (over Rs 1200 crores), Inside Out 2 defied all forecasts and became the highest opening of the year, surpassing Dune: Part 2.
The picture debuted in theatres on June 14.
Additionally, it was the first film to open at a box office exceeding $100 million (around Rs 834 crores) since Barbie in July of last year.
Since then, the film remained at the top of the box office rankings for three weekends running and has grown to become 2024’s highest-grossing domestic and international film.
It overtook 2015’s Inside Out in lifetime box office receipts earlier this week.
The sequel presently has a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while reviewers have given it an amazing 90% approval rating.
Inside Out 2 shows Joy (Amy Poehler) and her coworkers adjusting to change once more as Riley approaches her adolescence.
It brings an array of emotions performed by Maya Hawke (Anxiety), Adèle Exarchopoulos (Ennui), Ayo Edebiri (Envy), and Paul Walter Hauser (Embarrassment).
Another film that did well at the weekend box office was A Quiet Place: Day One, which brought in $53 million (Rs 442 crores).
With an estimated $11 million (over Rs 91 crores) debut, Kevin Costner’s film Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One ranked third.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bad Boys 4 was the year’s fourth highest-grossing movie with $10.3 million (Rs 86 crores).
Bollywood film Kalki came in fifth with slightly over $5 million (almost Rs 42 crores).
