Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Akhtar - who announced their decision to separate "mutually and amicably" in 2016 - have officially been granted divorce.
According to a report published in Mid-Day, the custody of daughters Akira and Shakya will continue to be with Adhuna. However, Farhan will get access whenever he wants.
As the report suggests, the case was called out twice - at 11.14 am and at 12 pm. The couple was not present in the court earlier, but were seen in the second session with their respective lawyers. After appearing before principal marriage counsellor VS Athavale, and principal judge MM Thakare, Farhan and Adhuna were granted divorce yesterday.
Their divorce was confirmed to Mid-Day by Farhan's lawyer Fazaa Shroff-Garg. "The divorce by mutual consent was allowed… by the family court in Bandra," Garg was quoted as saying by the daily.
Last year, the Akhtars issued a joint statement to declare their decision to separate.
"This is to announce that we, Adhuna and Farhan, have mutually and amicably decided to separate. Our children remain our priority and it is immensely important to us, as responsible parents, that they be protected from unwarranted speculations and public glare," read the joint statement.
"We sincerely request that we are given the privacy that is required at this time to move forward in a dignified manner," the statement stated further.
Farhan, 42, is the son of veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar and his former wife Honey Irani, and Adhuna, who is six years older to the Rock On!! actor, is a celebrity hairstylist. They exchanged wedding vows in 2000.
While Farhan made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai in 2001, it was the same film that launched Adhuna's career as a hairstylist in Bollywood. She now runs salon chain BBlunt.
Farhan is an accomplished multi-faceted talent in Bollywood. He produces, directs and acts in films, and he's also a writer and singer.
His split with Adhuna came as yet another end to a real life love story in tinsel town after actor Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan's split in 2013.
