Ananya Panday’s debut web show Call Me Bae has sparked a wave of comparisons with Kareena Kapoor’s iconic character Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Fans have been quick to draw parallels, leading to much discussion about whether Ananya’s role is an attempt to recreate the magic of Poo. In a recent interaction, Ananya addressed these comparisons and clarified the intention behind her character.
During a conversation with Instant Bollywood, Ananya was asked about Karan Johar’s statement during the show’s trailer launch, which suggested that her character, Bae, could be seen as a contemporary version of Poo. Ananya responded candidly, “We are not trying to replicate or even approach what Bebo did because she is a literal icon and her portrayal of Poo is a legacy. What she did was extraordinary. This is our homage to her. If Bae can be even one percent as lovable as Poo, then I think we all will be happy.”
Director Collin D’Cunha also weighed in on the discussion, emphasizing the importance of evolving characters for new generations. “Every generation needs its own Poo. Some of my assistants, who were born in 2001, haven’t watched K3G. They are still very young,” he said.
Call Me Bae follows Ananya as a South Delhi girl who, after losing everything, relocates to Mumbai and starts anew as a journalist. The series chronicles her journey through the journalism world while maintaining her distinct style. The cast includes Vihaan Samat, Varun Sood, Gurfateh Pirzada, Muskkaan Jaferi, and Niharika Dutt. Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, the show offers a fresh narrative while paying respect to past cinematic icons.
