Amitabh Bachchan Recalls Living with 8 Roommates In His 20s: 'There Were Arguments Related To...'
Amitabh Bachchan opened up about his days in Kolkata. The actor had worked in Kolkata before he moved to Mumbai to become an actor.

Amitabh Bachchan recalled his initial days of struggle on the recent episode of KBC. The actor recalled that before he ventured into the film industry, he was working in Kolkata. During the episode, Big B revealed he stayed in an apartment with seven others and earned Rs 400 at the time. The actor added that the house was such that it had only two beds and there were often arguments over who will get to sleep on the bed.

The Kalki 2898 AD star opened up about his days of struggle when a contestant revealed he was staying in Pune with eight others in a single room. “8 log ek kamre mei (8 people in a room?) 8 se hume etna zyada aashcharya nai. Hum joh apna college se padhai karke nikle toh naukri dhundne nikle, toh hum Kolkata gaye, waha kisi tarah se naukri mil gayi. Rs 400 mahine ke. Waha par bhi sir hum jaha reh rahe thei na, 8 log ek kamre mei thei. (I am not surprised with 8 people staying in a room. When I finished my studies and went to find a job, I ended up in Kolkata, where I managed to find a job that paid me Rs 400 monthly. Even there, I lived with 8 people in a room),” he shared.

Recalling the banter with his flatmates, Amitabh added, “Bahut maza aata tha. Thei humlog 8, palang tha do. Zameen par sona padta tha. Aapas mei khus rehte thei. Aapas mei jhagda hota tha aaj edhar soenge, kaun palang pe soega, bistar par rahega. (There was a lot of fun as we were only eight and only two beds were there. We used to sleep on the floor, sometimes on the bed. There were arguments related to who would sleep on the bed or floor).”

After working in Kolkata, Amitabh found his way to Mumbai and tried his hand on acting. He made his acting debut in 1969 with Saat Hindustani. However, it wasn’t until Anand and Bombay To Goa followed by the blockbuster success of Zanjeer that Amitabh Bachchan became one of the biggest superstars.
