The Uttar Pradesh Police is all set to crack down on 11 dreaded mafia who are on the run in the state following a letter by UP Director General of Police Vijay Kumar to all the police commissioners and SSPs to initiate action against the criminals in line with the Yogi Adityanath government’s policy.
The UP DGP recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the state’s crime graph and listed 11 dreaded mafia against whom ‘zero action’ has been initiated so far. Irked by the “lethargic” approach despite the UP government’s zero-tolerance approach towards crime and criminals, the DGP shot off a letter to all police chiefs.
Confirming the development, a senior police officer said the 11 mafia are part of a list of 61 dreaded criminals of UP. However, barring the 11, action has been initiated against the remaining who are mostly behind bars.
Vinay Tyagi alias Tinku, who hails from UP’s Muzaffarnagar district, tops the list of criminals on the run. According to the police, Tyagi, a dreaded gangster from West UP, is an accused in more than 32 cases of murder, attempted murder, fraud, kidnapping and others registered in several cities of UP and neighbouring Uttarakhand. Tyagi’s name first hogged headlines in 1985 in a kidnapping case. He was last arrested in 2006 from Delhi’s Anand Vihar area for handling illegal weapons.
Tribhuwan Singh of UP’s Ghazipur district is next on the list and is an accused in the ‘Usri Chatti Kand’. The incident was reported on July 15, 2001, when mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s convoy was attacked near Usri Chatti area on Yusufour Kasimabad road in Ghazipur. During the exchange of fire, Ansari’s bodyguard and a shooter from the attackers’ side was killed. Singh rose to prominence when Ansari lodged an FIR against him.
Others on the list include Singh Raj Bhati and Anil Bhati who hail from Gautambuddha Nagar; Sanjeev Dwivedi alias Ramu Dwivedi from Devariya district; Abhishek Singh alias Honey alias ‘Zehar’, Brijesh Kumar Singh and Subhash Singh from Varanasi district, and Chhavinath Yadav, Gulshan Yadav and Manoj Kumar Tiwari from UP’s Pratapgarh.
Prashant Kumar, UP Special DG (law and order), said multiple teams have been formed to track down the criminals on the run.
UP Police first released the list of mafia after chief minister Yogi Adtiyanath’s warning —‘Mafiaaon ko mitti mein mila denge’ (will reduced mafias who dust) — in the state assembly during a heated debate with leader of opposition and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav over the Umesh Pal murder case.
