Fashion got political! Now what?

Fashion and politics have always been intertwined, as has been made evident from history, whether it was Indira Gandhi's powerful bob cut or Jawahar Lal Nehru's jacket. Clothing and the personal style of politicians have had a remarkable impact in the way they are critiqued by the people.

Sporting a casual emsemble while kickstarting the campaign for Meghalaya Assembly elections came at a cost for Rahul Gandhi. Rahul was seen donning a black jacket paired with blue denim while attending a musical performance called ‘Celebration of Peace’ in Meghalaya. He looked suave and confident in the jacket, which had chequered detailing on the inside, paired with a basic grey T-shirt and a washed pair of blue denims. The Bharatiya Janata Party took a potshot at him by mentioning the price of his jacket in a quick tweet.

The jacket is two-in-one down puffer jacket from Burberry. On the Bloomingdales website, the cost of the jacket was listed as Rs 68,145. Burberry, which is a British luxury fashion brand is a high-end fashion favorite for many celebrities. An icon of outerwear, puffer jackets are a must-have jacket staple which provides comfort and style at the same time.

When Gandhi showed up to the concert looking dapper as ever to woo young voters for the February 27 elections, his style failed flat with BJP as they turned it into a retaliation moment for his "suit boot" jibe at the prime minister. The BJP was quick to grab the opportunity to attack the young Congress chief, who has been ridiculing the Narendra Modi government over GST, rising unemployment and slow economic growth. The BJP, however, had its own variation of what it meant by 'soot-boot jibe it took at the Congress chief.

"So @OfficeOfRG , soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with 'black' money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!" wrote the Meghalaya BJP below the picture which was paired with the jacket's original photo and price.

The ‘celebration of peace’ event didn't go well with Rahul Gandhi this time.
