All those who’ve visited Chandni Chowk would agree, it isn’t just the medley of shops and eating joints that makes it such a hit with all Dilli-wallas. The bustling crowd, the narrow bylanes, and its rich cultural heritage – every bit can add to your mesmerizing experience at Chandni Chowk. And one - new yet old - fascinating venue that has brightened up the area is Haveli Dharampura.
It wasn’t a bit easy to give Haveli Dharampura the majestic appearance it has today.
The efforts, the determination, the conviction and most importantly the vision of Vijay Goel, the former MP, ought to be lauded for giving the residents of Chandni Chowk another convincing reason to treasure their zone.
Since the Haveli - which as the historic details suggest, was constructed in 1887 - its restoration as a decaying haveli of Shahjahanabad – is as incredible as it was tough.
If you think it is just the architecture that will impress you, make sure you try the food that is offered here. The historic structure comes with two restaurants. ‘Lakhori’, which is located near the main entrance, speaks of the structure’s medieval charm. Its walls are made of lakhori bricks (hence the name) which were used in the Mughal period. Its roof-top restaurant with a striking view of Jama Masjid, Gurudwara Sis Ganj, Jain Lal Mandir and Red Fort isn’t operational yet, but it is expected to find several takers.
Coming back to its restaurant Lakhori - there are three words to define one’s experience here - rich, unique and irresistible.
This experience is possible only because the menu at Lakhori works in consonance with the typical Chandni Chowk feel. Whether it is the Mughlai dishes (offered here) that you know Chandni Chowk is popular for, or the unexpected spin to old recipes or just the distinctive representation of food – it all adds up to the experience.
After we took the tour of the historic structure and were informed about the efforts and time invested in restoring the grandeur of the haveli by fixing the bay-windowed façade, fluted columns and other key elements of the structure, we sat down to review the food.
The cocktails and smoothies offered here is an interesting blend of fruits, the flavorsome pan, and berries. We liked our host Vidyun Goel's choice – Chai Biscuit (a thick chai sort of a drink with a layer of crushed biscuits on top). It is a quick and easy drink to quench your thirst. Even though we decided to not try every drink mentioned on the menu, we were glad to have changed our decision. For, every drink came with a unique taste, presentation and impact.
If you find chillies in Jahan Ara (khus-based drink) slightly spicy, make sure you opt for the thick Pan Banarasi. It is a must try for all those who aren’t fond of the basic Paan which can be easily picked from the stalls that are available everywhere in the city. You might have loved Paan for its multiple variations – silver, gold, chocolate by now, but this drink will make you forget all that you tried in the past. It is truly incredible.
Those who still feel that it is difficult to imagine Chandni Chowk without its mouth-watering chats, find options in Palak Patta Chat and Cucumber Chat Canapes. Dahi Puri is a perfect alternate for Gol Gappas. One bite is enough to say that the taste and flavour is intact. We loved the combination of saunth and dahi in particular.
Just in case you are looking for Mughlai cuisine which comes with some exciting spin, opt for Kadak Roomali Roti. Since the size is huge, it is meant to be taken if in a group. Garnished with chopped tomatoes and onions and the much-needed spice, don’t even think of skipping it. Kebabs that are accompanied with small paranthas is irrisistible too. Next dish Aloo Gobhi Matar Deconstruct –surprised us completely.
We were almost full when Kofata Dogala appeared. Presented with two different and tempting gravies, the dish included Koftas almost hidden in unique Spinach leaves covering. Since we haven’t tried this anywhere, it is highly recommended.
Of Kheer Trio (available in Beetroot, Dates and Pan flavors) – we liked the last. The occasional bits of crunchy dry fruits made it amazing. The kulfis (also available in mango, kesar, rose, pan flavors) glzed with chocolate (in the form of a cone) is just as competent as the previous dessert. It’s sweet, and agreeably filling.
