Jadavpur University Student Death: Seven-Member Committee to Probe After 1st Year Student Falls from Hostel Balcony
The 18-year-old boy was an undergraduate student of Bengali (honours). He allegedly fell from the A2 hostel building around 11.45 pm on Wednesday

A first-year student of Jadavpur University, Swapnodeep Kundu, died after allegedly falling from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel, late on Wednesday. He received multiple injuries and was undergoing treatment at the KPC Medical College. He succumbed to the injuries at 4.30 am on Thursday.

The 18-year-old native of Bagula, Hanskhali, Nadia, was an undergraduate student of Bengali (honours). He allegedly fell from the A2 hostel building around 11.45 pm on Wednesday, they said.

Some students claimed that this was a result of ragging at the University. Sources have said that the boy had started staying with his friends instead of staying at the hostel. He had claimed to his relatives that he was afraid to stay at the hospital.

Swapnodeep’s father had said that he was under a lot of pressure the day before the incident. According to a Times Now report, the father had told the police that Swapnodeep had called his mother several times on Wednesday expressing fear for his life, adding that the boy wanted to return home to Hanskhali, Nadia.

Some students said that Swapnodeep reportedly was forced to run unclothed on the hostel terrace on Wednesday evening.

Jadavpur University has formed a seven-member inquiry committee on this case. This team will be headed by the Dean of Science. The anti-ragging committee too will be investigating the matter.

Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Amitabh Dutta said, “We will investigate. You will be informed. The registrar will inform you about the whole incident.” As per reports, police are investigating the matter and are waiting for a post-mortem report.

Certain students had reached out to the dean Rajat Ray, at around 10 pm to inform him of Swapnodeep’s unusual behaviour, reports. However, they were told that the matter will be dealt with the next morning.

Classes for the first year began a couple of days back, police said.

His father, Ramprasad, is an employee of Kundu Co-operative Bank cash branch and his mother, Swapna Kundu, is an ICDS worker. Swapnodeep is the elder one among the two children.
