New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs wants a criminal case to be registered against Delhi Golf Club for asking a Khasi woman from Meghalaya to leave because she was wearing a traditional dress.
MHA has asked Delhi Police to explore possibilities of lodging a criminal case against the club on grounds of racism.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, said that he has spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner to see if a case is made out against Delhi golf club.
"This is the worst form of racism. Meghalaya CM called me up and asked for a suo moto case to be registered. I have spoken to the Delhi Police Commissioner in this regard to see if a case is made out," Rijiju said.
The club had allegedly asked Tailin Lyngdoh to leave the club on Sunday because 'her attire was that of a maid’.
Delhi golf club in a statement has said that it has apologised to the member who had invited Lyngdoh as a guest.
But Lyngdoh said she has received no apology and she would not want to visit the club ever again. “I have been to London and many other countries but such a thing has never happened to me. I felt ashamed when they (staff members) asked me to leave the club because I dressed like a maid. There were many other people eating in that hall but no one bothered to protest," Lyngdoh told CNN-News18.
Rijiju called this an attack on India's cultural fabric and said will also take up the matter with urban development ministry which renews licences for such clubs. “Will also ask the Urban Development ministry which has a say over the club to see what steps can be taken to ensure people with such mindset don't enjoy such privileges,” Rijiju said.
A number of bureaucrats including Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi are members of the Delhi Golf Club.
Mehrishi, when asked about the incident, conceded that there are elements in the club who encourage such elitist behaviour.
