Is Coconut oil really fatal for health? Yes, this is the hot topic which continues to be debated and discussed ever since a Harvard professor warned against Coconut oil and called it 'pure poison'. As expected, the recent viral video which has already garnered over 900,000 views, has sparked a flurry of reactions with many calling the claim 'non-sense' and others tweeting about its miraculous health benefits.
Interestingly, many popular names from the medical industry have slammed Professor Karin Michels for her controversial statement and even demanded apology for her 'entirely false' claim. While speaking to Daily Mail, Dr Aseem Malhotra said, 'Having reviewed the totality of the evidence, I can tell you categorically that this claim is entirely false... I would say it's unscientific nonsense.' 'I call on Professor Michels, as a matter of urgency, to publicly retract her comments and make an apology,' he added.
In an exclusive interaction with News18.com, nutritionist Namita Nadar admitted that the claim came as a shock to her as well. "Right from our childhood, we have been explained the amazing health benefits of Coconut oil. From it being called the best oil for cooking purpose to it being referred to as the most reliable option for healthy hair and skin, it has indeed being the solution to almost all our problems. So when I read the recent study, I was quite shocked. How could such a claim be made?" she rues.
Elaborating on the countless advantages of Coconut oil, Nadar said, "It is used quite extensively in the hospital industry as well. From Alzheimer’s to epilepsy to Keto diet, Coconut oil is used for almost every issue. It is a medium-chain triglycerides. Hence, its main job is to get absorbed in liver and work as a source of energy in the body. Honestly speaking, I don't agree it is a poisonous oil."
Calling Coconut oil a saturated fat, Nadar doesn't forget to stress the fact that it should be consumed in moderation. "There is no harm in consuming 2 tablespoon which comes around 30 ml per day. Such a quantity won't harm you. While many feel it would prove fatal because it increases one's LDL which is bad cholesterol, it isn't true. It will not impact your LDL if consumed in moderation (1- tablespoon per day)," she clarifies.
