Woman 'breaks tradition' to enter shrine, villagers demanded purification ritual
The woman climbed the security barricade to the platform where the idol is installed and offered prayers on Saturday.

Maharashtra: Trouble broke out at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra after a woman entered a famous Shani shrine’s sanctum sanctorum on Saturday despite ban on their entry.

As per rules framed by the temple committee no woman are allowed to enter the shrine’s sanctum sanctorum. The incident sparked protest in the area as villagers demanded stern action against the woman and insisted for a cleansing or purification ritual.

The incident comes in the backdrop of global outrage over the Sabarimala temple in Kerala disallowing menstruating women to enter the shrine.

On November 13, the new Travancore Devaswom Board President, Prayar Gopalakrishnan, has stoked up a controversy on the issue of impurity of women who, if menstruating, are not allowed to enter the Sabarimala temple.

His statement led to massive protest across India and women took a dig at him through social networking sites.

Gopalakrishnan stated that women will be permitted to Sabarimala after the invention of a machine which can scan and judge their purity.
