The workshop was divided into two sessions. In the first session, a talk on “Phytochemicals as Therapeutics,” Saraswathy explained  the concept of phytochemicals and listed the bio-active compounds present in plants.“Most of the bio-active compounds present in plants are associated with maintaining good health. Some important phytonutrients sources are vallarai, keezhanalli, manathakalli, sembaratha etc,” she said.Saraswathy emphasised on the effect that the phytonutrients have in curing diseases, adding that the isolated phytonutrients have to be purified with various chromatographic techniques.The second part of the  event included a practical workshop for students. The aim of the workshop was to help students understand the various phytochemicals present in food we take daily.  The workshop included sessions on isolating, extracting and preparing essential oils such as eucalyptus from plants.Saraswathy also laid importance on studying biochemistry and emphasised its significance in the field of phytochemical industry.
