New Delhi: After receiving flak for its newly introduced 'read receipts' feature from users around the world, WhatsApp has now updated the app with a new setting that lets users disable the feature - giving some a sense of relief.
The updated WhatsApp app is not available on Google Play Store as yet. Android users can download the upgraded version of the app directly form the WhatsApp website.
To disable the feature, users need to go to the Privacy section in Settings. The 'read receipts' feature is located at the end under Privacy, which reads: "If you turn off read receipts, you won't be able to see read receipts from other people".
WhatsApp early this month updated the app with a new 'read receipts' feature, letting users know when the messages sent by them were read. Once a message is read, the two check marks next to it turn blue. For any message that you send, you can now also see a Message Info screen that displays the details of when your message was delivered, read or played by the recipient(s).
In a similar move, in February, WhatsApp had rolled out a much-requested feature - the ability to hide the 'last seen at' timestamp. The feature was widely welcomed by users who did not want to display their app usage activity to others. When introduced, hiding the 'last seen at' feature was initially available via the company's website, before being made available on Google Play.
