As part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, the District Information Office in association with district administration, Education and other department launched a week-long cleanliness drive and contest in all government and aided schools and other departments under the district administration.
The week-long drive in schools titled ‘God’s Own Country, Clean Country’ focuses mainly on waste management.
“Besides cleaning the school, the students will also conduct a study in the neighbourhood. Forms will be given to each house to know the methods employed for waste disposal, about environment upkeep and the source of water. Various contests will also be held in this connection,” said Deputy Director of Education M D Murali.
All schools have been issued guidelines to conduct the programme. “We launched the programme in our school on Tuesday afternoon. The students tidied up the classrooms and surrounding. Forms will be issued to the students to take it to their homes and neighbours as part of a study,” said Jean Sebastian, head master, St Sebastian UP School, Ponjikkara. Classes are held as usual in the morning and afternoons are set aside for the cleanliness drive.
The booklet ‘Gandhisookthangal’ brought out by the Information and Public Relations Department will be distributed in schools. An essay contest will be held for high school students at the district-level on the theme, ‘My role in creation of Clean Kerala’ on Friday. The winners will compete at the revenue district-level. The first three winners will be given books worth `1000, `750 and `500 respectively. An oration contest will be held for higher secondary students at the revenue district-level on October 8.
