Waste management expo draws crowd

The ‘Suchitwa Mela’ held here the other day  saw about a dozen biowaste management systems on display. The exhibition conducted by the district administration to find out ways to solve the waste management crisis in the district is among the first-of-its-kind in the state.

Pipe composting developed by ‘Bhumika’ under the Kalamassery Rajagiri Outreach and basket compost developed by Thrikkakara Evergreen Mission Community Development Service were among the systems that attracted crowd for their simplicity of usage and low cost.

Low space requirement and lack of odour are the other key attractions of these systems.

In large-scale systems, the Waste Display Unit developed by CREDAI and the Bio-Reactor developed by Kalamassery Agro Machinery Consulting Company drew many people. Some of the items on display could be accommodated within a space of 4 square feet.

District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth asked the panchayats and local bodies to utilise the grants and subsidies made available to them for waste disposal.

The government has announced 75 percent subsidy for household level waste disposal units. The beneficiary has to bear 25 percent of the cost. The panchayats will recieve `35 lakh for solid waste management plants and for individual level plants the subsidy the grant is upto `1 lakh. The government has identified 30 service providers to provide the biodegradable units. Excise and Ports Minister K Babu asked people to make the best of the opportunity.
