MALAPPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan inaugurated an indefinite hunger strike by Temple Protection Committee secretary K P Manikandan on the premises of Sree Panthallur Bhagavathi temple in the district on Wednesday.The hunger strike is being observed under the auspices of the Temple Protection Committee demanding the return of temple land from a person who is keeping the land in his possession even after the lease period.The land had been given to Cheriyan, son of Thayyil Mammen, in 1943 for a period of 60 years.Inaugurating the strike, Achuthanandan alleged that Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had buried the report submitted by Revenue Secretary Niveditha P Haran on the issue. The High Court had directed the government to submit a report on the dispute.The land measuring 786.51 acres was given to Cheriyan in 1943. The Temple Protection Committee alleged that Cheriyan had stopped giving tenant tax after 33 years.
