THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has forwarded a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his effective intervention and immediate steps for decommissioning the existing dam in Mullaperiyar and according permission to Kerala to construct a new dam.In the letter, Achuthanandan demanded that the water level in the dam should be brought down from 136 ft to 120 ft.Achuthanandan pointed out that the Mullaperiyar dam had become very weak after the strong tremors which had hit surrounding areas of the dam in 1979, resulting in greater water leakage. When studies have made it clear that the dam will crash if a tremor of the intensity of 6 or more on the Richter scale hits the zone in which the dam is situated, there had been 27 mild and medium tremors since July 26 this year alone, he said.Achuthanandan recalled that the Prime Minister had assured an all-party delegation from Kerala which had met him in November 2006 that the state’s concerns on the dam will be addressed.
