Vizhinjam project coming alive
The State Government has finally decided to open the lone bid for the Vizhinjam port operator..

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On the day Express began a four-part series to critically assess the issues dogging the Vizhinjam ICTT project, the State Govt made up its mind to get a move on and decided to open the lone bid for the port operator.   Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that the State Cabinet has directed the empowered committee headed by the Chief Secretary to open the price bids of the consortium led by the Welspun Infratech Ltd. The consortium comprises Welspun Corporation and Welspun-Leighton.   Express had on Tuesday highlighted the importance of the State Govt taking a decision on the Welspun bid at the earliest to prevent any further delays in the implementation of the multi-crore seaport project. “The empowered committee will study whether the terms proposed by Welspun are in the best interest of the state,” Chandy said. The bid would be examined “soon”.Mundra Ports and SEZ Ltd and the Welspun Infratech-led consortium remain for the post of private operator to run the port on a 30-year concession. The Home Ministry had denied clearance to Mundra last month.
