New Delhi: India's Sania Mirza, who is 28th in the WTA singles rankings, has been seeded 26th at the US Open, which starts in New York next week.
Sania has had a very good run in the singles in the past few weeks after recovering from a ligament tear in her right knee in March.
The top seeds in the men’s and the women’s singles are world No. 1s Roger Federer and Justine Henin respectively.
Federer capped his preparation for the last Grand Slam of the year by defeating James Blake of the US in straight sets in the Cincinnati Masters tournament on Sunday.
The Swiss has already won at Flushing Meadows thrice.
In the women’s singles Belgian Justine Henin is the top seed and is hoping to repeat her 2003 triumph.
She, too, is coming to the US Open after a title triumph. Henin won the Toronto Cup defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic in a tough two setter 7-6, 7-5 on Sunday.
The seeds are as per the world rankings with Rafael Nadal at two followed by Novak Djokovic at three and Nikolay Davydenko fourth.
Three other former champions are seeded in the men's event with American Andy Roddick fifth, 2001 winner Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 16th and 2000 champion Marat Safin of Russia at 25.
Defending women's champion Maria Sharapova of Russia is seeded second with Jankovic third and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who had won in 2004, fourth.
Wimbledon champion Venus Williams is seeded 12th while her sister Serena, who has not played since Wimbledon, is eighth.
